Timor-Leste: Women Press Freedom Condemns Detention of Antonieta Kartono Martins and Camera Seizure from Suzana Cardoso

September 4, 2024 - Timor-Leste, Dili

Antonieta Kartono Martins was detained while covering street vendor eviction in Dili and held for hours before release.

Another journalist, Suzana Cardoso, had her camera confiscated, and footage deleted by police.

Women Press Freedom is alarmed by these actions. Considering Timor-Leste’s strong press freedom record, this raises serious concerns.

We urge authorities to refrain from targeting press covering public interest issues, allowing them to report freely.
