Lebanon: Israeli Targeted Airstrike Hits Compound Housing 18 Journalists, Including Yumna Fawaz, Killing Three

October 27, 2024 - Palestine, Gaza

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the targeted attack by Israeli forces on a compound housing 18 journalists, including Yumna Fawaz, in the early morning hours. Fawaz, in a direct statement to Women Press Freedom, noted that the compound had been designated as a safe zone for journalists; however, three journalists were killed in this attack.

We are outraged by Israel's intentional targeting of journalists, which constitutes a war crime and a blatant violation of press freedom. Such actions not only threaten the lives of those who seek to report the truth but also undermine the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.

We call on Israel to immediately cease its aggression against journalists and to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court regarding potential war crimes. Journalists play a crucial role in documenting human rights abuses during wartime and must be afforded the protection they deserve.

The global community must unite to safeguard press freedom and ensure that those who risk their lives to inform the public are not subjected to violence and intimidation. We stand in solidarity with our fellow journalists and demand accountability for these egregious violations.
