Guatemala: Michelle Mendoza Forced to Flee Amid Threats and Online Harassment Campaigns

October 16, 2024 - United States, Washington D.C.

Michelle Mendoza was forced to flee her country after receiving threats stemming from online disinformation campaigns that attacked her reputation. The harassment, linked to her investigations into criminal networks within the government, included a sexually explicit video call threatening her with violence.

Since seeking refuge in the United States, Mendoza continues to write for Guatemalan press in exile. She also continues to be harassed and threatened online.

Mendoza's experience is sadly not unique. Women Press Freedom data reveals the persistent targeting of women journalists through online harassment, troll campaigns, and increasingly, deepfakes.

We stand in solidarity with Michelle and all who are relentlessly targeted online. National authorities and social media platforms must do more to prevent and respond adequately to reports of harassment against women journalists.
