Uruguay: Court Awards Ana Inés Martínez $15,000 for Sexual Harassment by TV Channel Manager

Montevideo’s 5th Turn Labor Court partially upheld sports journalist Ana Inés Martínez’s claims against Channel 10, awarding her $15,000 for sexual harassment by former general manager Alejandro Cattaneo. However, the court dismissed allegations of workplace harassment and denied compensation for unfair dismissal.
The ruling acknowledged the severe power imbalance, confirming Martínez faced intimidation through explicit messages from Cattaneo, even outside work hours. The court held Channel 10 liable under Uruguayan law, emphasizing the employer’s responsibility for harassment by senior representatives.
However, workplace harassment claims against news coordinator Nelson Fernández were rejected due to insufficient evidence. Both parties are reportedly considering appeals.
While Women Press Freedom welcomes the court’s decision to recognize and penalize sexual harassment as a critical step, the dismissal of other claims signals the need for stronger mechanisms to address workplace inequality and retaliation.
