Samantha-Jo Roth, a correspondent for NY1 & Spectrum 24 hour news station, was harassed online for a tweet she posted on the day of the Capitol Hill insurrection. In her tweet, Samantha stated that she would report the online harassment to Twitter and law enforcement. CFWIJ offers full solidarity and support to Samantha-Jo and condemns the bullying she faced online.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Brutal Attack Against Journalist Erin Schaff At Capitol Hill
Photojournalist Erin Schaff for The New York Times was assaulted by Trump supporters during the insurrection at Capitol Hill. Schaff was capturing images during the US riots when security was breached at the building. She was surrounded by a group of men who pushed her to the floor and snatched her press credentials. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is utterly dismayed by the brutal attack against Erin. We stand in solidarity with the journalist and appreciate her fearless and continuous work despite the attacks she faced.
United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Temporary Arrest Of Video Journalists Zoeann Murphy And Whitney Leaming While Covering The Capitol Hill Turmoil In Washington D.C.
Washington Post journalists Zoaenn Murphy and Whitney Leaming were arrested by police while reporting on the Capitol Hill insurrection. The city has been placed under curfew for the next 15 days. The orders issued by Mayor Muriel Bowser clearly state that the imposed curfew does not apply to essential workers, including media with outlet-issued credentials. While speaking to the Washington Post, Zoeann Murphy said she was wearing her press credentials when she was arrested. Her colleague Whitney Leaming kept the camera rolling during the incident.

Freelance photojournalist Amanda Andrade-Rhoades was targeted multiple times with projectiles reportedly fired by the police. She was also confronted by three different protestors who threatened to shoot her. Amanda was covering the Capitol Hill riots when she felt rubber bullets hit her leg multiple times. CFWIJ condemns the assaults and stands in solidarity with the photojournalist.

CBC journalist Katie Nicholson was reporting live when she was suddenly swarmed by a mob of angry Trump supporters. Meagan Fitzpatrick, a Toronto resident, shared a video on Twitter where Katie Nicholson can be seen helpless while hostile Trump supporters gather around her, hurling insults. Katie and her crew stood their ground but were unable to continue reporting amidst the threatening chaos.

Journalist Beth Nakamura was harassed by a group of men while covering a pro-Trump rally in Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Oregon. The Coalition For Women In Journalism monitors the US Elections and electoral campaigns. The electoral scene is mostly dominated by misinformation and fear of violence and the consequences of the election results. Many journalists expressed their concern about the situation in the street following the results of the elections. The Coalition For Women In Journalism is concerned about the level of disinformation circulated on Social media platforms and even by the Current president himself and we call upon all parties to adhere to the rule of law and democratic principles.
