Canada: Two More Women Journalists of Color Targeted as Deeply Racist, Organised Hate Campaign Escalates

The widespread hate campaign against journalists of color escalated on Monday with two more women journalists receiving threatening and abusive emails. At least 17 journalists were targeted after right-wing politician Maxime Bernier tweeted a provocative message inciting his supporters. Freelance sports journalist Shireen Ahmed and CBC host Angela Sterritt were the latest targets of the ongoing hate campaign, weaponized racist and misogynistic language to threaten, intimidate and silence journalists of color. Maxime’s tweet has since been deleted but the organised campaign against journalists has continued unabated, with many of the vile emails sent from the same email account.

Although later taken down by Twitter, the journalists faced hostile digital attacks as a result of his tweets.

Malta: CFWIJ Condemns The Misogynistic And Derogatory Comments Made Towards Norma Saliba

Norma Saliba, the head of PBS News, was subjected to sexist slurs by controversial commentator Leone Ganado. His comments were posted during a live stream Norma was hosting with Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech. Leone made sexist remarks directed at Norma and later called her a political prostitute. Norma filed a complaint with the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) and requested Leone retract his hurtful comments. After widespread criticism, Leone issued an apology and swore to never cross the line in the future. CFWIJ condemns the humiliation Leone Ganado inflicted on Norma, and we hope he will sincerely stand by his apology.

Australia: CFWIJ Condemns The Perth Mayor’s Derogatory Remarks Towards Jenna Clarke

Broadcaster turned politician Basil Zempilas made reprehensible remarks towards his female co-host. While hosting the morning show, Mr. Zempilas referred to Jenna finding a seat on the floor at the attorney general's press conference earlier that week. The mayor commented that he saw Jenna Clarke before "in jeans and on your knees". The sexist remarks of Mr. Zempilas sparked controversy on Twitter. CFWIJ condemns the derogatory remarks made by the mayor, and we ask him to issue an apology.

United States: CFWIJ Condemns The Online Racist And Sexist Attacks On Seung Min Kim

Washington Post correspondent Seung Min Kim was subjected to racist and sexist attacks. The hateful attacks against the journalist were followed by a picture of her with senator Lisa Murkowski. The journalist inquired Murkowski about an old tweet of Neera Tanden, a nominee for director office. As Murkowski was unaware of the tweet, Kim showed it on her phone and included the senators' reaction in her story. Kim did exactly what any reporter should have done i.e, present the information if the subject is unaware of it. CFWIJ stands in solidarity with Kim and condemns the racist and sexist attacks on the journalist.
