Canada: CFWIJ Condemns The Organized Troll Campaign Against Women Journalists And Journalists Of Color

At least eight women journalists received vile emails after right-wing politician Maxime Bernier tweeted a provocative message to his followers. Displeased by their coverage of his work, and their line of inquiry, Bernier encouraged his supporters to “play dirty”, thus initiating a violent targeted harassment campaign. He even went so far as to publish the email addresses of some of the journalists online, making them vulnerable to online abuse. Although later taken down by Twitter, the journalists faced hostile digital attacks as a result of his tweets.

Slovenia: CFWIJ Demands Swift Investigation Into The Perpetrators Threatened Journalist Eugenija Carl

A suspicious delivery of white powder and a threatening letter arrived at the public broadcaster RTV Slovenia, addressed to journalist Eugenija Carl. The journalist eyes water after contacting the suspicious dust. She had a bitter taste in her mouth and a burning sensation in her throat and nose. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is appalled by the vicious attack against the journalist. We demand Slovenian authorities to conduct a swift investigation to find the perpetrators and ensure Eugenija’s safety.

United States: CFWIJ Stands in Solidarity with Shelley Ross Regarding Her Sexual Harassment Allegation Against Chris Cuomo

New York - In an op-ed published in The New York Times, former TV news producer at ABC and CBS, Shelley Ross recounted the time she was harassed by Chris Cuomo at a party in 2005. Cuomo, who is now a renowned name at CNN, was working under Shelley Ross shortly before the incident took place. He reportedly groped her publicly and tried to play it off as a joke when rebuked. Cuomo has recently been criticized for aiding the PR response to the sexual harassment claims filed by several women journalists against his brother, Andrew Cuomo, former Governor of New York.

Poland: CFWIJ Police Interference With Agnieszka Kaszuba's Reporting on State of Emergency At Belarus Border

Agnieszka Kaszuba, a reporter for the daily newspaper Fakt, was briefly detained along with her team when she was following a bus carrying migrants near the Polish-Belarusian border. The journalist was reporting about the arrest of migrants on the frontier. Police held Agnieszka and her team for about an hour and searched their car. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces the obstruction against journalists. We extend our solidarity with Agnieszka.

Pakistan: CFWIJ Appalled by The Lack Of Sensitivity Displayed by Pakistani Courts in Tenzeela Mazhar’s Case

The court refused to accommodate the medical concerns that Tenzeela Mazhar is facing. Tanzeela is currently pregnant and nursing a fractured foot. Upon request to not appear in one of her hearings due to its proximity with when her child is due, the judge told Tenzeela that he would issue her arrest warrant if he found her absent. Tenzeela is currently facing defamation charges in response to a harassment claim she filed against the Managing Director of Pakistan Television (PTV).

Türkiye: CFWIJ Gazeteci Beyza Kural’ın Haber Yapma Hakkını İhlal Eden Polislerin Gereken Cezayı Almasını Talep Ediyor

Gazeteci Beyza Kural Yılancı’ya şiddet uygulayan üç polis hakkında açılan davanın ikinci duruşması bugün İstanbul’da görüldü. Duruşmaya sanık polislerin hiçbiri katılmadı. Mahkeme, yurtdışında bulunan sanık polisin duruşmadan vareste tutulmasına ve diğer sanık N.D.’nin gelecek duruşmada Ses ve Görüntü Bilişim Sistemi (SEGBİS) ile dinlenmesine karar verdi. Bir sonraki duruşma 10 Aralık 2021’de görülecek. Gazetecilikte Kadın Koalisyonu (CFWIJ), Türk yargısından gazetecinin haber yapma hakkını ihlal eden ve şiddet uygulayan polis memurları hakkında gereken cezai yaptırımın uygulanmasını talep ediyor.

Turkey: CFWIJ Demands Justice For The Journalist Beyza Kural's Case

The second hearing of the trial for three police officers who viciously and deliberately attacked reporter Beyza Kural Yılancı on charges of "violating freedom of work and profession" was held today in İstanbul. None of the police officers attended the hearing. The court ruled that the accused police officer, who was abroad, should be suspended from the trial and the other officer be heard by Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) in the next hearing. The next hearing was adjourned until December 10, 2021. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) demands the Turkish judiciary to impose the necessary criminal sanctions against the police officers for violating the journalist's right to report.

Journalist Afroza Sarkar was physically assaulted at the conclusion of an event she was attending. Afroza and a colleague of hers, who was also injured in the attack, are under treatment. The unidentified men who attacked the journalists remain at large. The incident comes as a shocking reminder of how unsafe journalists are in the country.

Nigeria: CFWIJ Condemns The Raid at Norah Okafor’s House

Officers from The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) broke into Norah Okafor’s house in the middle of the night without any prior notice. They harassed Norfah’s family and damaged her property without offering any reasons. According to Norah, they were armed men who came prepared in a vehicle and were around 25 in number. Norah is understandably shocked at this entirely unprovoked attack.
