Htet Htet Khine, a freelance producer for BBC Media Action, was arrested by military authorities on August 15, along with Sithu Aung Myint, an independent columnist and commentator. The military-run Myawaddy reported the arrest of both journalists. The two were supposedly hiding in an apartment in the Bahan Township of Yangon when police arrested them.

Myo Myat Myat Pan, an ex-employee of Myitkyina News Journal, was abducted by police authorities on April 14. The journalist was reportedly arrested on orders from the military council. According to Myitkyina News, the plainclothes police officers took the civilians away in cars around 6 p.m. Her whereabouts remain unknown after her arrest. CFWIJ condemns the abduction of Myo Myat Myat Pan. Despite Myo Myat Myat Pan no longer pursuing journalism, the authorities detained her anyway. We demand Myanmar Junta authorities release Myo Myat Myat Pan immediately.

Journalist Thin Thin Aung was abducted by the state on April 8, and is currently in state custody. Following her detention, the state forces raided her home, seized her belongings, and destroyed all her journalistic work. The state of journalists in Myanmar remains precarious and requires urgent international attention.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is utterly dismayed by deliberate police violence against journalists in Myanmar. We call upon the law enforcement authorities to provide a safer environment to journalists and to respect press freedom. The Myanmar crisis needs to be addressed urgently by all stakeholders in the country to end this curb on critical voices.
