Hong Kong: CFWIJ Condemns The Violent Attack Against Leung Zhen
A Hong Kong reporter, Leung associated with The Epoch Times was beaten by two unidentified men on Tuesday. The journalist was hit mainly on her legs by a baseball bat. The attackers were successful in fleeing from the scene a minute after assaulting Leung. The 49-year-old journalist was targeted as she came out of her residential area on Good Shepherd street in Ho man Tin, Kowloon.
Hungary: CFWIJ Condemns The Wrongful Conviction Of Journalist Julia Halasz
Julia Halasz, a correspondent for the news website 444, was convicted of criminal defamation charges on May 6. The appellate court in Budapest upheld the earlier verdict of a lower court issued on November 12, 2020. The journalist alleged that a city district councilor, Laszlo Szabo, violently attacked her in May 2017 during event coverage. The journalist was accused of taking unauthorized pictures of the event.
India: CFWIJ Condemns The Harassment And Threats Against Vineetha Venu
Former journalist at a leading Malayalam news network, Vineetha Venu, came forward about threats and harassment to her and her family in a Facebook post on Saturday, May 29. She alleged that she and her family were subjected to moral policing by cyberbullies of The Communist Party of India (CPI-M).

Ginger Gloom, a reporter for Codigos also a lawyer, received death threats over her coverage about the candidate for federal deputation in Guanajuato, Ricardo Gómez Escalante and his campaign team. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is extremely concerned about Ginger’s safety. These devastating threats often lead to physical violence or beyond. We urge Mexican authorities to take immediate action to ensure the journalist’s and her family’s safety.
Belgium: CFWIJ Is Appalled By The Online Harassment Against Journalist Samira Atillah
Belgian journalist Samira Atillah shared her struggle with cyberbullying on May 25. She shared she is distancing herself from Twitter because of the persistent flow of threats and intimidations targeting her on the platform. CFWIJ stands in solidarity with Samira and condemns the online harassment she has faced. Unfortunately, the social media platform has become toxic for several women journalists.
Belarus: CFWIJ Condemns The Intimidation Policies Against Arina Malinovskaya
Belsat TV programme host Arina Malinovskaya, who left Belarus due to possible persecution, was threatened with her relatives. Arina was called and threatened by the Belarusian authorities to return to the country. She was told that until her return, her relatives would be kept in detention. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) is devastated by the state policies to intimidate journalists in the country. We demand the Belarusian authorities an immediate end to the outrageous crackdown on press freedom.
Bosnia And Herzegovina: CFWIJ Condemns Milorad Dodik Targeting Journalist Tanja Topić With Misogynistic Speech
The Chairman of the Presidency, Milorad Dodik, threatened journalist Tanja Topić calling her ‘agent of the German BND’ and ‘traitor’ in a statement to the SRNA news agency from Republika Srpska. The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) condemns the intimidation tactics coming from top political officials against journalists. We find these tactics endanger journalists’ safety and stand in solidarity with Tanja.

We demand Turkish authorities to acquit the journalist immediately.
Canada: CFWIJ Is Appalled At The Online Abuse Received By Journalist Lauren Pelley
Reporter for CBC News, covering the coronavirus pandemic received online abuse in her email inbox, accusing her of fear mongering. Lauren has extensively covered the global impact of the virus on human lives and state policies as well as the vaccination process that is now underway. Journalists like Lauren are putting their lives on the line to ensure minimum misinformation regarding the online health crisis, and any abuse levelled against them is reprehensible.
Palestine: CFWIJ Condemns The State Of Israel For Detaining Palestinian Journalists Wahbi Makiya And Zeina Al-Halawani
Israeli forces physically assaulted and arrested two Palestinian journalists in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood without charge and warrant. Wahbi Makiya and Zeina Al-Halawani were arrested while they were covering the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem where the Israeli state intends to enact mass displacements. This is the latest in a series of examples of free press violations that Israeli forces have committed since the beginning of the recent cycle of violence in the region.

United Kingdom: CFWIJ Condemns The Persistent Harassment Against Journalist Rosamund Urwin
Rosamund Urwin, a columnist and senior feature writer at the London Evening Standard, shared the story of persistent harassment she has faced for the past two years. In a Twitter thread on May 14, the journalist shared that the stalker responsible for harassing her has arrived in London. Rosamund stated that the last time he was in the area he visited her office before going on the run and remained untraceable for days. While explaining the details of the ordeal, she revealed how the unsettling experience left her emotionally drained.
