Sudan: Women Press Freedom Condemns Illegal Detention of Clarissa Ward and Her Team by Rival Militia
October 23, 2024 - Sudan, North Darfur
Women Press Freedom unequivocally condemns the illegal 48-hour detention and intimidation of CNN chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward and her team while covering the urgent humanitarian crisis in North Darfur by rival militia. They endured threats and lengthy interrogations, with their driver taken away in chains. Held under armed guard, they faced limited access to food, water, and privacy. This distressing incident underscores the escalating dangers journalists encounter in conflict zones and the pressing need to safeguard press freedom.
As members of the media, Ward and her team were fulfilling their vital role in informing the world about the dire situation in Sudan, where millions are suffering from displacement, hunger, and violence. The actions taken against them not only jeopardize their safety but also undermine the fundamental principle of free expression and the public's right to know.
It is unacceptable that journalists are subjected to threats, interrogation, restriction and unlawful detention while attempting to report on the realities faced by vulnerable populations.
Women Press Freedom calls on the international community to take immediate action to ensure the safety of journalists working in perilous conditions. We demand that the Sudanese authorities and all armed groups respect the rights of journalists and allow them the freedom to carry out their work without fear of reprisal. The world must stand in solidarity with those who risk their lives to bring vital information to light, and we must hold accountable those who seek to silence them.
