Russia: Transnational Repression Continues with Arrest Warrant for Exiled Editor Alesya Marokhovskaya
January 17, 2025 - Russia
Ministry of Internal Affairs issue an arrest warrant for exiled journalist Alesya Marokhovskaya, chief editor of the independent investigative outlet IStories. The charges remain unclear, but she has previously been fined twice under Russia’s restrictive “foreign agent” law.
Marokhovskaya has faced threats and harassment for her reporting since leaving Russia.
Women Press Freedom condemns this continued persecution. Issuing arrest warrants against exiled journalists can obstruct their ability to secure residency and travel visas. We demand an end to the Kremlin’s transnational repression and call on governments to reject Russia’s attempts to discredit independent journalists with baseless charges.
