Ecuador: Women Press Freedom Denounces Continued Harassment and Intimidation of Gisella Garcés by Police Chief

October 17, 2024 - Ecuador, Los Rios

Women Press Freedom, unequivocally condemns the recent complaint filed against journalist Gisella Garcés by Darwin Haz, the police chief of Los Ríos and vice president of the pro-government ADN movement. This complaint, which alleges a violation of privacy, represents a troubling attempt to intimidate and silence a journalist who is simply exercising her right to report on matters of public interest.

It is deeply concerning that Garcés has faced ongoing harassment and threats since she published critical information regarding candidates for the National Assembly. Such actions not only undermine the integrity of the press but also threaten the safety and freedom of journalists who dare to question those in power.

We stand in solidarity with Garcés and call for an immediate cessation of all forms of intimidation against her. It is essential that the judicial system remains impartial and does not become a tool for those in power to suppress dissenting voices.

We urge all stakeholders to uphold the principles of press freedom and protect journalists from harassment and intimidation. The role of the media in a democratic society is paramount, and we must collectively defend it against any attempts to silence critical voices.
